Henry Sonnenberg originally founded the company in 1919. Production in Netherlands was launched in 1932. By 1940, the company had expanded into the American market. In 1946, Henry Sonnenberg merged with Joe Hunter’s company, which was developing technology and equipment for production of aluminum parts.

The company went from strength to strength over the decades and continued to expand all over the world. Hunter Douglas has since built up several branches in Europe, Australia, and Asia between 1960 and 1980. In 1971, the headquarters relocated to Rotterdam, Netherlands where it has since operated.
